Labrador Retrievers: They’re loyal and lively, making them fantastic family companions and service dogs. Any Labrador owner will tell you just how awesome their dog is. I mean, it makes sense why they’re the most popular breed for 29 consecutive years in a row!
So, what makes Labradors special? Here are the 10 top reasons:
- Labradors are highly intelligent
They’re intelligent by design, it’s a well-known fact. Historically, Labradors worked with fishermen to retrieve nets, and later helped retrieve wild ducks for hunters.
- Labradors are healthy
Apart from the common issues that many medium-size breeds face (such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia), Labradors are generally a healthy dog breed. They can live up to 11-13 years if they are properly cared for, quite impressive for a larger breed!
Remember, a nutritionally balanced diet, high-quality dog food, and plenty of exercise will set a great baseline for all dogs.
- Labradors are highly adaptable
Part of the reasons why Labradors are popular is because they’re adaptable to many types of lifestyles and living situations, they make an excellent addition for many homes. Obviously, homes with a large yard is ideal, but they can easily adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough exercise.
- Labradors are devoted to their families
Labs are well known for their devotion to their families. They are very affectionate towards their owners and in turn become protective.
- Labradors are obedient and easy to train
Labradors are happy, eager to please dogs that learn quickly when treated right. That’s why they were traditionally bred as hunting dogs and are now often trained to be service/guide dogs & therapy dogs. Not only do Labradors perform well in task training, obedience training wouldn’t be any problem for them as well. They will listen and obey to your commands.
- Labradors are all weather dogs
Did you know labs have a distinctive two-layer coat? They simply don’t feel cold. Underneath the glossy waterproof outer-layer, there’s soft fur that acts as an insulating layer designed to keep them warm while swimming in freezing water (partly explaining their enthusiasm for swimming throughout the whole year). The unique two-layer coat is perfect for warm and cold weather.
- Labradors love children
Labs adore companionship and love connecting with all family members, especially children – they’re the perfect playmates anyone could ask for! But don’t underestimate their high energy levels, they can become overly excited with affection. It’s ideal (or even essential) to give them proper socialization training from an early age.
- Labradors are friendly to other pets
Similarly with children, the easy-going attitude of Labradors allows them to comfortably get along with other pets (including cats). Again, it’s very important for them to be properly socialized with people and dogs from an early age.
- Labradors love to show affection
Labradors are very loving animals that show affection in many ways, they’ll show affection from a very early age, and you might have found that your pup “chose you”. So expect a lot of nosing, licking, following, and tail wagging!
