Just like any other Labrador Retriever, Blaze loves adventure, spending time with family, sleeping, and snacks. He’s 10 years old, lives in Finland, and is pretty much a social media celebrity!

But — if you can’t already tell, there’s something special about him. Blaze’s coat has slowly changed colour.

Blaze was born with the typical shiny Labrador black coat and stayed that way for a while, but as he aged, that changed. White patches slowly started to appear all over his coat.

But — if you can’t already tell, there’s something special about him. Blaze’s coat has slowly changed colour.

Blaze was born with the typical shiny Labrador black coat and stayed that way for a while, but as he aged, that changed. White patches slowly started to appear all over his coat.

Blaze’s dad, Santeri stated “at first, we thought it was just aging, but the white color started to come more and more, month by month”.

At the beginning, the white patches swiftly covered most of Blaze’s face, later spreading to his shoulders and legs. After multiple visits to the vet, his dad realized that it wasn’t Blaze’s age that was changing his coat, it was actually a skin condition called “vitiligo”.

You might ask, what’s vitiligo? It’s a skin condition which is mainly diagnosed in humans, and very rarely, also affects dogs. While it’s not life-threating or contagious, it has a standout physical impact. For humans, it’s patches of the skin losing the natural pigmentation, while in canines, it’s the fur that loses its color. There is no clear cause for Vitiligo, but may be considered an autoimmune disease.

But that doesn’t stop Blaze from living his best life! Santeri (Blaze’s dad) affirmed “it doesn’t stop blaze from enjoying his everyday life. He’s still healthy, full of energy, and wants to go places”. He mentioned that “Vitiligo is just a cosmetic thing”, giving Blaze a lot of attention with his new beautiful and very unique look.

Blaze’s story gained major traction after his dad shared a photo of him in a poplar Facebook group called “dogspotting society”. His unique and fascinating markings caught the interest of many fans globally, making Blaze a social media celebrity over night.

Here’s a few of Blaze’s social media photos that will make you want to follow him!
